Welcome to Wedge Oldham's Rocketpedia Profile Page
Since the beginning of the space race Wedge has been obsessed with rockets. He got his first Estes catalog in 1968, and joined the National Association of Rocketry in 1969. Wedge joined the Navy in 1975 with high hopes of being able to get stationed at the Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake California. Volunteering for duty on submarines Wedge attended the Naval Guided Missile School. A last minute decision shifted Wedge’s carreer from missiles to electronics.
Returning to rockets in 1989, Wedge found the world of high power rocketry, and was hooked. After successfully certifying Level 1, 2, and 3 Wedge built the first of many large projects, starting with a 15 foot 1/3 scale Nike Hercules. This impressive feat was followed by full scale Black Brant II rocket standing 30 feet tall, and powered by three “P” motors. Next, Wedge designed and built a full scale Nike Ajax booster powered by an 8” Q motor.
Wedge currently serving as President of the Rocketry Organization of California. He is the past Vice President Rocketry Organization of California four years running and has served on the Executive committee to host to national rocket launches (LDRS 20, and LDRS 26) Wedge lead a team of rocketeers in an episode of “Master Blasters” (“Supersonic Paper Airplanes”) and was featured in an in-depth interview for Extreme Rocketry magazine and was selected to be put on the cover of Extreme Rocketry with his most recent Nike Ajax Project.
Currently Wedge is building a full scale Mercury-Redstone to fly in 2011, marking the 50th anniversary of Alan Sheppard's historic flight. This project will be followed by a full scale Nike Hercules. You can read more about this effort here: Nike Project
